The Casual Sewer

Most people own a sewing machine. Very few know how to use it confidently. The Casual Sewer class at Envy Her Singapore changes that in 55 minutes — covering everything you actually need to know to sit down at a machine and make it work for you: how to thread it, wind and load the bobbin, operate it safely, identify your stitch options, mend a seam, and upcycle something you already own with a trim or a patch.

This is not a project class. You will not be making a bag or a cushion cover. This is a machine literacy class — the one session that should come before every other sewing class you ever take. And because it comes from Envy Her Singapore, a working lingerie manufacturing studio, everything you learn is professional, practical, and immediately useful in real life.

Open to children and adults. No experience required. Everything provided.

Threading a machine seems simple until you are staring at one alone at home at 11pm with a torn hem and a dinner to wear tomorrow. The Casual Sewer class exists for exactly that moment — and for every sewing situation before and after it.

In 55 focused minutes, you will learn how to thread your machine from scratch, wind and load a bobbin, practise stitch control on paper before moving to fabric, identify the core stitch types on your machine dial, understand tension and how to fix it, mend a real seam, and walk away with a small upcycled piece you finished with a lace trim or decorative stitch from Envy Her Singapore's own manufacturing archive.

Jeannie teaches every session personally. She has been working with industrial and domestic sewing machines her entire career. The tips she shares in 55 minutes will save you hours of frustration at home.

Good news — almost everything is provided by Envy Her Singapore. All fabrics, lace, tulle, sewing materials, design sheets, and tools are included. Here is all your child needs to bring:

• Comfortable clothing — nothing too precious, as fabric and thread have a way of finding their way onto clothes
• Closed-toe shoes — required in the studio at all times for safety around pins and scissors
• A water bottle — sessions run up to 3 hours and we want everyone to stay hydrated
• A small snack — optional but welcome for longer sessions
• An open mind and a big imagination — the most important things on the list

Everything else — machines, mannequins, fabrics, lace, threads, scissors, pins, and design materials — is on us.

Is this suitable for complete beginners? Yes — this is specifically designed for people who have never touched a sewing machine, or who tried once and found it overwhelming. Zero experience is the right starting point for this class.What age is suitable?The Casual Sewer is open to children and adults — from around age 8 upward. Younger children will work alongside a parent or guardian. There is no upper age limit.

Can I bring my own machine? You are welcome to bring your own machine if you prefer to learn on the one you have at home. Let us know in advance so Jeannie can familiarise herself with your model before the session.

What do I leave with? You leave with machine confidence, a small upcycled piece finished with lace from our manufacturing archive, and a branded take-home tip card covering threading, tension, the 3 key stitches, and mending quick reference.

Is this a one-off class or part of a series?The Casual Sewer is a standalone 55-minute session. It is designed to be the first class you take before any other sewing programme — including ENVY Junior : Stitch & Style for children, or any of our longer fashion workshops.

Who teaches the class? Every Casual Sewer session is taught personally by Jeannie, founder of Envy Her Singapore. Jeannie has a professional background in lingerie manufacturing and trains sewers at an industry level. You are learning from the real thing.
