Where Every Sewing Begins

Do I need any experience to join? Will I feel silly if I've never touched a machine?

None at all — this class is built specifically for first-timers and anyone who's felt intimidated by a sewing machine. No prior knowledge assumed. It's a judgment-free space to get hands-on with the absolute basics before committing to a bigger project.

Building Confidence

What can I do after this class — am I ready for a project?

This class is intentionally designed as a stepping stone — you can leave with a finished product based on your speed. Most importantly, you will leave knowing you can operate a machine without fear. It's the ideal warm-up before jumping into any of our project-based workshops (like the phone strap or cushion classes), so you walk in already comfortable with the machine instead of learning two things at once.

Take-Home Tip Card Suggestion

a small branded card participants take away with:

  • The 5 threading steps in order
  • The tension cheat sheet
  • The 3 stitches every beginner needs to know
What To Bring

Good news — almost everything is provided by Envy Her Singapore. All fabrics, lace, tulle, sewing materials, design sheets, and tools are included. Here is all your child needs to bring:

  • Comfortable clothing — nothing too precious, as fabric and thread have a way of finding their way onto clothes
  • Closed-toe shoes — required in the studio at all times for safety around pins and scissors
  • A water bottle — sessions run up to 3 hours and we want everyone to stay hydrated
  • A small snack — optional but welcome for longer sessions
  • An open mind and a big imagination — the most important things on the list

Everything else — machines, mannequins, fabrics, lace, threads, scissors, pins, and design materials — is on us.

FAQ

What will I be able to do by the end of the hour?

You'll walk through the three fundamentals that trip up most beginners: threading the machine correctly, winding and inserting the bobbin, and controlling speed and stitch direction with the foot pedal — including straight lines, pivoting at corners, and stopping/starting cleanly. Small, low-stakes practice drills mean you'll repeat each skill enough times to actually feel it click, not just watch it demonstrated once.

Do I need to bring my own sewing machine?

No — machines are provided, so the fee covers equipment use, one-on-one guidance, and all consumables (needles, thread, etc.), with no hidden extras. Bonus: since you're sewing on a machine similar in size to your own, the fit and proportions translate well when you use the sleeve at home.
